Modeling Three Dimensional Avascular Tumor Growth using Lattice Gas Cellular Automata

چکیده
We model and simulate avascular tumor growth in three dimensions using lattice gas cellular automata (LGCA). Our 3D models are an advance over current state-of-the-art where most 3D models are in fact only models of two and a half dimensions, i.e., a series of 2D models simulated to give an appearance of a 3D model. In our 3D model, we use binary description of cells and their states for computational speed and efficiency. The fate and distribution of cells in our model are determined by the Lattice Boltzmann energy. We simulate our model in a comparable size of lattice and show that the findings are in good agreement with biological tumor behavior.

Mathematically Modeling Spatial Tumor Growth in Parallel
Significant work has been done modeling cancerous tumor growth and response to therapy under certain simplifying assumptions, specifically, the assumption of spatial homogeneity. We have chosen a spatially heterogenous model for cancer cell growth using a hybrid Lattice-Gas Cellular Automata method. Cell mitosis, apoptosis, and necrosis are explicitly modeled along with the diffusion of nutrien...

Introduction As a tumor grows, the demand for oxygen and nutrients increases and it grows further if acquires the ability to induce angiogenesis. In this study, we aimed to present a two-dimensional continuous mathematical model for avascular tumor growth, coupled with a discrete model of angiogenesis. Materials and Methods In the avascular growth model, tumor is considered as a single mass, wh...

Due to the rate increase in cancer incidence, many researchers in different fields have been conducting studies on cancer-related phenomena. Most studies are conducted to focus on cellular and molecular aspects of cancerous diseases and treatment strategies. Physicists have been using mathematical modeling and simulation to explain the growth pattern of tumors. Although most published studies i...

We discuss two different types of Cellular Automata (CA): lattice-gasbased cellular automata (LGCA) and the cellular Potts model (CPM), and describe their applications in biological modeling. LGCA were originally developed for modeling ideal gases and fluids. We describe several extensions of the classical LGCA model to self-driven biological cells. In particular, we review recent models for ri...
